— Project intent

A precise answer to the site and programme.

The renovation and extension of a single-family house in Flawinne, a semi-rural village in the province of Namur, Wallonia, demonstrates an architectural approach grounded in the dialogue between existing fabric and new construction, balancing continuity with deliberate material contrast. The original two-pitched-roof volume is preserved in its entirety and restored with a refined white render, while slate roofing and dark window surrounds lend the building a contemporary, understated reading that sits comfortably within the surrounding residential village context.

The central architectural gesture is the addition of a low, single-storey pavilion, set in frank material opposition to the main body of the house. Clad in dark vertical-joint cladding and topped with a flat roof terrace, this extension volume mediates the transition between the renovated dwelling and the garden below. Generous glazed bays running across the facade establish a considered porosity between interior living spaces and the lawn, drawing natural light deep into the plan.

The landscaping reinforces this two-part composition: a pathway in light-toned materials structures access and connects the two volumes without separating them, while low planting beds root the project in its site and soften the encounter between built form and landscape. The compactness of the ensemble, the coherence of the material palette and the rigorous horizontality of the new volume ensure a successful integration into this semi-rural environment. The project was designed by STARC, an architecture and engineering firm based in Gembloux, Belgium.
