— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
In Suarlée, in the province of Namur (Wallonia), STARC designed a single-storey rear extension to an existing single-family home, aiming to improve liveability, energy performance and natural light throughout the dwelling. The massing of the existing main volume is kept intact, while a flat-roofed annexe is introduced at the rear, creating a seamless yet architecturally distinct junction between old and new.
The brief called for a larger family kitchen and an interior reconfiguration to expand the living area. The compact footprint of the extension is confined to the rear of the property, remaining invisible from the public realm and ensuring a respectful integration within the surrounding residential fabric.
In terms of materiality, the extension is clearly differentiated from the original building through an anthracite-toned composite panel cladding, which lends the addition a contemporary character while maintaining a measured dialogue with the host structure. The flat roof reinforces this dual reading of the ensemble, making the addition legible as a considered and coherent architectural gesture.
Completed in 2019, this residential architecture project demonstrates how formal restraint, enhanced comfort and sensitive contextual insertion can be achieved together within a Walloon neighbourhood setting.
