— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
In Malonne, in the province of Namur (Wallonia), STARC designed a contemporary extension to an existing single-family home, with the aim of improving liveability through the creation of functional and naturally lit living spaces.
Positioned at the rear of the existing house, the extension occupies roughly the same footprint as the previous outbuilding. Its flat roof lends the project a distinctly contemporary character and clearly differentiates the new volume from the original building. The programme includes a redesigned and enlarged kitchen, a utility room, a master bedroom suite and a bathroom, restoring a more coherent and appropriate spatial composition to the whole.
The rear facade, oriented to the north-east, features generously sized openings carefully designed to maximise natural light intake. From both the kitchen and the master suite, these openings provide pleasant views over the garden without creating any direct overlooking of neighbouring properties, thanks to a dense green boundary screen. The kitchen, conceived as the main living space, gains in roominess and warmth, encouraging family life in a bright and welcoming setting.
In terms of materiality, the new volume is finished in a very light grey render, giving the overall composition a contemporary coherence while subtly marking the distinction between the existing house and its extension. The project also enhances the energy performance of the home, delivering an outcome that is sober, functional and high in architectural quality.
